With another valentineโs day on the horizon, once again Iโm refusing to be sad about spending the day single and instead embracing it. On this day of love, it’s time to break open a box of chocolates and have a romantic movie marathon. I know rom coms are notorious for being cheesy, and predictable. As it turns out, this happens to be my kinda thing; being a hopeless romantic who laughs easily. So, here Is my list of my all-time favourite rom coms โ in order of release.
- Pretty Woman (1990)
Julia Roberts plays a down on her luck hooker and meets (somewhat) handsome rich guy, Richard Gere. In exchange for her to become his side piece, rich guy showers her with gifts, shopping sprees and pampering (ahem, goals, ahem). The charming young woman ends up stealing his heart (of course).
- 10 things I hate about you (1999 โ the year of Claudia!)
This is a classic teen rom com which if you havenโt already, I demand you see it now. if for no other reason than to see one of Heath Ledgerโs best works (aside from the joker, of course. May this gorgeous man rest in peace). Julia Stiles plays a strident feminist (Kat) with no desire to date. Her sister, however, is the pretty and popular girl who only wishes she could date. Their fatherโs ultimatum? Her sis can date when Kat starts. Ooooooooooooh.
- Miss Congeniality (2000)
Now this one could technically also fall under the action comedy genre if it werenโt for the small love storyline. But I just had to add it because is swear Sandy B is a goddess. In fact, sheโs yet another rom com regular that I will happily go see any day. but this has to be her best movie. She plays a spy who goes undercover as a beauty pageant contestant. I mean doesnโt that just sound awesome or what! Not to mention she is so incredibly funny.
- Bridget Jones Diary (2001)
Funny and relatable! I read the book beforehand and the movies were, I think, just as good. Thereโs also something about her British accent that makes everything funnier. I couldnโt imagine Bridget Jones having the same affect if she was American. You can sympathise with her journey which makes you even happier for her successes. Fantastic portrayal by Renee Zellweger might I add.
- My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
This oneโs for the fam! You donโt have to be Greek to relate to this movie. For example; us Indian folks are quite similar; we spend holidays together doing mostly eating related activities. This is another movie that will have you laughing your head off, mostly at the family dynamics more than the love storyline. My family still frequently quotes this movie from time to time. 5-stars indeed.
- 27 dresses (2008)
Sheโs always the bridesmaid but never the bride. Always taking care of others and throwing epic weddings. Whatโs even more astounding, the 27 bridesmaid dresses stashed in her closet. She meets a handsome journalist (my favourite type of love interest) who takes an interest in her impressive collection. Will she finally get her happy ending?
- Sheโs just not that into you (2009)
To be honest, you could stick Jennifer Aniston in any movie, and you can bet your bottom dollar that Iโm not only going to watch it but Iโm gonna love it too. This is a multi-storyline movie and apart from this one character; Gigi (who drives me insane!). The rest of the movie I really loved. I like how it shows relationships of different types and in different stages. Not to mention the stellar cast; did I mention Jennifer Aniston is in it?
- Valentineโs Day (2010)
And who could forget this classic Valentineโs day flick Valentineโs day. a multi-storyline film featuring many different couples on the day of love (mult-storylines seems to be a reoccurring theme for me). This one makes me teary and gets my heart fluttering every time. Itโs what makes me still love Valentineโs day (the day) even though Iโm single. It gives me hope. I know it sounds cheesy, forgive me alright.
- Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)
One of the more recent movies on this list, Crazy, Stupid, Love is hilarious and sweet. This movie literally had me in stitches, but I also found the end so heart-warming. Itโs another one of those movies with multiple storylines, and couples of different kinds. So, I think thereโs something there for everyone. Alsoโฆ Ryan Gosling!!!!
- Blended (2014)
This is another feel-good, family, rom-com starring a classic rom-com duo โ Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. I think when it comes to Drew, the same rule applies as to Jen. I basically like all the rom coms she stars in. This is a movie that my family also enjoyed as we watch two families with single parents, unite together on an unexpected trip to Africa.
There you go ladies (and gentlemen), my top 10 rom coms to see this Valentineโs day. Now get bingeing!
